Is It Always Luck?
Hi Friend,
How are you? I was blown away by the incredible feedback from my last newsletter—if you missed it, you can check it out here. The response was so overwhelmingly inspiring that I decided to create a workshop focused on building your personal supporting village. Stay tuned for details!
But today, let’s talk about something else: luck and control. Do you like feeling in control? I know I do—but not in the way I used to, where I felt like things would fall apart if I weren’t managing every detail. Now, I see control differently — To me, being in control today is equivalent to investing time and effort into what I truly want to pursue, with intention, purpose, and action (Book Spoiler Alert) :)
Recently, a friend said something at a party that struck me for a bit. She mentioned how "lucky" I was to be able to leave my Wall Street career and stay home with my children. At that moment, I smiled and agreed. I do indeed feel lucky. But afterward, I realized something important—it wasn’t just luck.
What looks like luck is often a behind-the-scenes effort of planning, preparation, and dedication—all happening simultaneously so that luck can have a turn. Let's not downplay our time investment, efforts, and dedication to the fate of pure luck. The reality is that we work hard, we try our best, and we do amazing things with all the roles we play. We are in control.
In my case, my decision to step away from a successful career on Wall Street wasn’t easy, and it certainly wasn't handed to me. It took years of sacrifice to enable myself to do so (long working hours, endless business dinners, endless networking, hard work, and an open mind), strategic savings and investing, continuous planning, and pivoting the original plan—always with my supporting village behind the scenes. In my upcoming book, The Waves We Ride, I share more about how I made that life-changing decision.
For now, I wanted to share this thought with you: luck is not always just luck — luck is a consequence of your endless effort to create and purposely invest in something you genuinely believe in.
During that entire time, I was in control—not just of my career but of my life’s direction. The ability to pivot my plans, focus on my family, write my upcoming book, and still pursue my passion for empowering women—that was something I intentionally created for myself. And here’s the truth: many of us have more control than we give ourselves credit for. Many of us have everything we need to be "lucky." But because we are so caught up in everything life throws at us, we are sometimes disconnected from our ability to create our luck and shape our own path. And that's okay — we cannot tackle all at once.
While we can’t control every aspect of our lives, we can position ourselves for the changes we want. It’s not about waiting for things to happen —it’s about making them happen through hard work, focus, clear goals, and planning. Challenges will come, but when we stay prepared and adaptable, we give ourselves the power to thrive.
As I prepare for my book launch, I’m more inspired than ever. So, I would like to leave you with this thought: Where in your life can you take more control and not surrender to the fate of luck? How can you better prepare yourself for the opportunities you want to create instead of waiting for them to arrive? How can you nurture your ability to be "lucky"?
Feel free to share your thoughts with me by replying to this newsletter or connecting on Instagram or LinkedIn. I cannot wait to hear from you!
Let's continue growing together! Stay tuned for "The Waves We Ride" launch date!
With Love,
Ladyane
